New York State Trooper Shot and Killed Responding to Domestic Dispute

A U.S. Army soldier is accused of killing his wife and a police trooper in upstate NY after a domestic dispute. Davis was approaching the home when he was shot. Sergeant Justin Walters did two tours in Afghanistan. "Trooper Davis exited and walked toward the driveway, where he was shot once". He died at the hospital.

This is the second NY law enforcement death in one week.

"This has a bad effect on everybody".

ADDIE JENNE: So I just want everyone to know what a wonderful, wonderful man he was, going to try to provide assistance to a - in a very bad situation.

State police say a woman also was found dead at the scene. And they're out here every single minute of every single day, unseen.

"They searched his locker and they found a hit list with a list of people to kill", says one person who did not want to be identified.

State police said Davis was on the force four years.

A female friend of Nichole Walters also was shot but her injuries are not considered life-threatening, New York State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II said at a Monday afternoon news conference.

Walters enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 2007, and deployed to Afghanistan twice, from January 2009 to January 2010, and from March 2011 to March 2012.

He was sentenced in Ottawa County Juvenile Court to complete 40 hours of community service and complete a rehabilitation program after pleading guilty in the destruction of tombs case.

Walters is from Zeeland, Michigan. It's unclear exactly when he moved to NY state.

Walters was charged with first and second-degree murder on Monday morning.

The newspaper also reported that Walters pleaded guilty to destructing property after more than 100 tombstones were toppled at a cemetery in his hometown earlier in 1999. He was arraigned in Town of Leray Court and is being held without bail in the Jefferson County Jail. Walters didn't have a lawyer at the arraignment. He waived his preliminary hearing, which meant the case will go straight to a grand jury.

Mikels said Nichole Walters was staying at home to raise the couple's toddler-age child.

A third victim, Rebecca A. Finkle, was shot in her upper torso. "She got along with everybody", Mikels said.

"Please reach out to your unit Chaplain, behavioral health specialist or chain of command if you need assistance", Gen. Piatt wrote.

Trooper Davis, of Evans Mills, NY, was 36 years old. Before serving at the police barracks in Philadelphia, Davis was assigned to the Troop D Watertown barracks. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office and other agencies will wait on highway overpasses to salute Davis. The murder suspect was killed by police shortly after the officer shooting.

Trooper Davis is survived by his wife and three children.
