Spider-Man: Homecoming opened with $117 million at the US box office, based on Sunday estimates.

For "Homecoming", the studio returned to Spider-Man's teenage roots, casting Tom Holland in the part.

After two tries with Andrew Garfield as Spidey in 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its sequel in 2014 - both of which were financial and critical duds - the studio pressed the reset button on the franchise and enlisted the help of Marvel Studios to bring the character into its coveted universe. Peter go after the Vulture (played by Michael Keaton), and stars Zendaya as Michelle, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Laura Harrier as Liz Allan (Peter's crush), Tony Revolori as Flash, and Jacob Batalon as Peter's best friend, Ned.

"Baby Driver" was third with $12.7 million in its second weekend of release. This weekend it's expected to make $2.1 million from 941 locations.

On the other hand, it has marked the biggest ever worldwide box office opening in South Korea as it grossed a total of $3.5 million on its opening day ( July 5).

The film, which had a budget of $175 million, also earned rave reviews.

"Transformers: The Last Knight" finishes as No. 5, taking in just under $2 million on Friday.

Overall, the film nabbed $257 million around the world this weekend. The anticipated opening weekend is higher than industry estimates, which were in the $90 million to $110 million range, while the studio cautiously pegged it at $80 million. It is now also the fourth movie to launch to over $100 million domestically this year, following "Beauty and the Beast", "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", and "Wonder Woman".

"Cars 3", "The House", "The Big Sick", "47 Meters Down", and "The Beguiled" round out the top ten. However, when Kazan's American grad student Emily falls into a coma, Nanjiani's Pakistani stand-up comedian begins to bond with her parents Terry and Beth (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter).

Internationally it added an estimated $6.8 million to its total for a global tally topping $745 million.

In terms of limited release fare, A Ghost Story earns an estimated $108,067 from four locations for a strong per theater average of $27,017.

Overall, the summer box office stands at about $2.3 billion, or 8% lower than a year ago.
