CBI raids Lalu Prasad Yadav and family's 12 premises over corruption charges

LJP chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today dared Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to sack his deputy Tejashwi Yadav following CBI raids on properties owned by RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav's family members.

"The CBI raids are part of the BJP's conspiracy to defame me and my wife and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi and my children on baseless allegations", he added.

The case relates to Lalu allegedly granting illegal favours to a private hotel company through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), when he was railway minister from 2004 to 2009.

The sale and purchase of two prime hotels of railways took place in 2006 when Lalu was the railways minister and Gupta was the company affairs minister.

While the JD (U) maintained a studied silence over CBI raids on Lalu Yadav's family, the Congress party extended full support to RJD chief Lalu Yadav who remained in his Patna-based residence on Saturday, drawing a road map for future action.

Lalu Prasad Yadav could be seen calming him down.

"The Congress is with Lalu Prasad and the RJD because the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government has been conspiring to bulldoze secular parties", said Choudhary, who is also the Bihar Education Minister in the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance government. You filed a case against my children and wife. The RJD chief, however, brushed aside the allegation and tore into the BJP, saying that it was a political conspiracy against him.

On February 25, 2005, the Kochars sold a commercial property measuring of three acres to Delight Marketing Company Pvt Ltd for Rs 1.47 crore, an amount much lower than the circle or market rate of Rs1.93 crore.

It was the tender process that was purposely dodgy to favour a particular company, the CBI alleged.

The conditions were further tweaked to make Sujata Hotel the sole contender for the bid, the agency alleged. When this tender was given in 2006, Lalu was Railway Minister.

While over 15 bid documents were received for both the hotels, IRCTC has no records of bidders other than Sujata Hotel. "Rabri Devi was not a public servant at that time and Tejaswi was a minor", the RJD leader said.

The land was severely undervalued during the transfer, said the CBI. The CBI alleges that the Patna land was illegally transferred to Mr Yadav's family as a favor, in exchange for a 15-year lease given to an entrepreneur named Harsh Kocchar to run two hotels for the Railways in Puri and Ranchi.
