A US-led worldwide coalition is providing air and ground support to the offensive, which Iraq's army and militarized police are also fighting in a multi-pronged attack.

The United Nations estimates that tens of thousands of civilians are still trapped inside the Old City, where temperatures have soared to around 45 degrees Celsius and are expected to climb higher in the coming days.

In Raqqa, Islamic State's headquarters in northern Syria from where it plotted attacks around the world, USA -backed militia were fighting inside the historic Old City after coalition air strikes breached its walls in two places.

"The portions targeted were 25-metre sections and will help preserve the remainder of the overall 2,500-meter wall", the coalition said in a statement.

Iraqi forces marked a significant victory this week when the Rapid Response Division retook Mosul's main hospital complex on the city's western side.
