In a final flourish of bipartisan camaraderie for the night, Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, his team's manager, accepted the trophy, then gave it to his GOP counterpart, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, to put in Scalise's office on behalf of the Democrats. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. "We also praise special agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey of the Capitol Police for their heroic deeds that saved so many lives".

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love, and the people who call it home", President Trump said in a video address to the crowd. They went head to head at Nationals Park, all for charity.

Rep. Steve Scalise is still in critical condition, but his health is improving, the Congressman's surgeon said two days after Scalise was shot at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.

Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier. "Ladies and gentlemen, let's play ball".

"That was tough for me", Duncan said. His aide, Zack Barth, who was shot by the Virginia assailant, walked across the field on crutches.

The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

"This game is a game where we always is come to have fun and for everybody to do their very best and hope that our team wins", said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Trump added, "We pray for all of the victims of this awful crime who are still recovering, including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many". They are on track to raise $1 million this year, almost twice as much as last year.
