Turkish troops arrive in Qatar for joint military drills

"The blockade has been ongoing for two weeks and the blockading nations have offered no formula for resolving the crisis", Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed al-Thani, a Qatari government spokesmant. "They have to lift the blockade to start negotiations", Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told reporters in Doha, as quoted by Reuters.

Abadi was to leave Iraq on Sunday for a regional tour of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran that ends on Tuesday.

"We have a long-term outlook".

The Saudi-led trade restrictions on Qatar are still in place, with no indication the tensions are close to de-escalating.

Qatar-based broadcaster Al-Jazeera said the Twitter account for its main Arabic-language channel had been suspended on Saturday, in the latest "conspiracy" to hit the station. Shortly after this visit, the Qatar news agency released comments attributed to the Emir of Qatar about the stabilizing role of Iran in the region, calling Iran an "Islamic Power" and describing Qatar's relations with the state of Israel as "good".

"Saudi Arabia and some of the region's Arab countries have become a puppet of the United States of America, and pre-planned tensions in the region will only have the U.S. exploit resources of Arab-Islamic countries" and intensify an arms race among Arab states, Major General Seyed Yahya Rahim Safavi said on Sunday.

"It also strenuously denies that Minister Carmelo Abela has made the remarks reported b y, or any remarks whatsoever on the situation concerning Saudi Arabia and Qatar".

Elsewhere in his statements, Abadi said Baghdad would never get involved in the regional policies of other countries.

Qatar remains the home of some 10,000 American troops at a major USA military base.

"Neighbors are permanent; geography can't be changed. Dialog is imperative, especially during blessed Ramadan", Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad tweeted, reacting to the development. And Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slammed the economic and political isolation of Qatar as "inhumane and un-Islamic".

On the sidelines of the Oslo Forum in Norway last week, Zarif told former United Nations secretary General Kofi Annan that Iran continues to send food to the besieged Qatar. Last week Riyadh, along with other Arab governments, severed ties with Qatar, citing its support of Iran as a reason.

Turkey is one of the few powerful countries in the region willing to openly show its support for Qatar.

Erdogan described the sanctions as a "death penalty", rejecting the allegations addressed against Qatar.
