South Korean fighters jets to hold exercises with US B-1B bombers

South Korean fighters jets to hold exercises with US B-1B bombers

Seoul's defence ministry said the bombers engaged in routine exercises with South Korean fighter jets aimed at showing deterrence against North Korea.

The North Korean dictator should be anxious about USA attacks that use "precision-guided missiles and bunker-buster bombs", Sauter added in the Fox News report. But Kim pointed out that the allies have regularly conducted such joint air drills to counter threats from North Korea.

The B-1B's flight here also follows controversial remarks by Moon Chung-in, a special adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in on unification, security and foreign affairs, that Seoul may decrease the deployment of US strategic assets here and the number of the allies' combined military drills if the North freezes its nuclear and missile development.

The family of American college student Otto Warmbier said the 22-year-old died Monday, days after his release from North Korea.

The drills are to include a mock bombing operation at the Pilsung Range in the eastern province of Gangwon, Yonhap reported citing sources.

Despite worldwide condemnation and sanctions, North Korea has built a small nuclear arsenal and is developing nuclear-capable ballistic missiles that could threaten Japan, South Korea and - one-day - even some United States cities.

Warmbier's parents said their son had been in a coma for more than a year before his death.

He said the Pentagon would maintain lines of communication with the Chinese military to head off any escalation in the South China Sea - but keep this separate from the diplomatic effort on North Korea.

Kang also expressed her condolences over the death of USA student Otto Warmbier, who died this week after being released from 17 months of imprisonment in North Korea.

Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and his South Korean counterpart, Kang Kyung Wha, on Wednesday confirmed the importance of increasing pressure on North Korea to stop its nuclear and missile programs.

They agreed to closely cooperate to achieve the joint goal of denuclearizing the North and mobilize every possible means to that end, including sanctions and dialogue through bilateral or trilateral coordination involving the U.S.
