IN leads Midwest with area counties' improving unemployment rates

The employment picture improved across the region in May, dropping to less 4 percent unemployment throughout the immediate counties, the first time the jobless rate has been that low since May 2016, according to figures released Tuesday morning by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Although it was up slightly from April, Mercer County was the only OH county with a rate below 3 percent.

Rice County had an unemployment rate of 3 percent in May, down from 3.2 percent in April.

Dubois, Adams and LaGrange counties tied for the lowest unemployment in the state in May, according to a new state report. Across the nation, the rate of unemployment for the Month was 4.3 percent. Darke County was 3.8. IN beat out Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and OH by scoring an estimated joblessness rate of 2.8 percent, an improvement over last May's 4.2 percent. The county had 34,556 more workers on the job in May, an improvement of 174 over the previous month.

South central IN counties also improved upon past joblessness rates.

Dubois County's labor force consisted of 23,790 people in May - 23,307 of whom were employed. The highest unemployment rates were found in Natrona (5.4 percent), Fremont (5.3 percent), and Campbell (5.1 percent) counties.

Greene County: The jobless rate of 3.8 percent for May ranked fourth in Indiana.

Construction, which remains strong in Ruidoso and surrounding subdivisions, posted the second largest numeric gain, 3,200 jobs, and by far the largest percentage gain at 7.5 percent.

Employment in local government was down 700 jobs while federal government employment was up 200 jobs from a year ago in May. Vermillion County had the highest unemployment rate in IN for May 2017, with a rate of 4.2 percent. A total of 646 people was looking for work in May, down 8.8 percent from April (down 40.6 percent since May 2016).
