Celebrating Freedom on Juneteenth

Celebrating Freedom on Juneteenth

Saturday's celebration, originally slated to take place in Cook Park from 12 to 4 p.m., had to be moved inside the nearby Girls Inc. building because of rain. "It's important that we have events like this to represent our youth and help bring up leaders in our community", teen leader Julian Hudspeth said.

Wright paid for the crowns, and for much of the second annual Juneteenth celebration. For the descendants of African slaves in America, however, June 19th - or Juneteenth, as it is commonly known - is the actual triumphant day for celebrating freedom.

In the 20th Century recognition of Juneteenth declined, only to find a resurgence during the Civil Rights Movement. We need to keep the community together, with all the stuff that's happening today.

"It educates the younger generation and they look forward to it", Sessions said.

Gordon Granger visited Galveston, Texas, to inform the community that President Abraham Lincoln had abolished slavery two years prior.

It celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.

Trump appears to confirm he's under investigation
Comey testified in a Senate hearing last week that he believed he was sacked "because of the Russian Federation investigation". Trump later contradicted his own staff, saying on May 11 he had the Russian Federation issue in mind when he fired Comey.

"The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order", the website states.

There probably isn't a day that goes by when most people in this country don't miss the hell out of President Obama, but on days like this, the contrast can become truly painful. "They want to see us succeed".

Recognizing and celebrating the positive parts of complex and contested historical moments (i.e., the moments when the oppression ended) is also an important and often effective way of creating national unity.

Though the Civil War had ended, many African-Americans remained enslaved in Texas until the USA military arrived.

"So many whites have died for blacks to be free", she said.
