Scalise on the mend, now in 'serious' condition

He sustained "a single rifle shot to the left hip" that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding", the hospital said in a statement.

Scalise's condition was upgraded to "serious", from "critical" after undergoing another surgery on Saturday, according to a statement from Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

He opened fire at the Republican congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, Va. after asking another lawmaker whether the team practicing was a group of Republicans or Democrats.

Scalise had another surgery Saturday, the latest in a series of operations that's stretched from the day of the attack Wednesday, and the doctors said he "continues to show signs of improvement". The person familiar with the discovery did not disclose the names but said that those listed had been briefed.

Addressing to the House and Senate lawmakers, Mattis said by mid-July will be providing a comprehensive strategy for the country. Saturday's incident is the second insider attack in just one week. "The incident is now under investigation", the statement read.

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that might happen or when Scalise, 51, will be able to leave the hospital.

The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, was killed by police Wednesday after firing dozens of bullets during the congressional practice session. He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting.

Mr Scalise's surgeon said he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", despite being seriously ill when he arrived at hospital after the shooting in Virginia last week.

Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials declined to confirm media accounts that the list of names Hodgkinson carried was a "kill list"; they said the names were listed without any other comment. Hodgkinson had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.
