Barth worked as an intern for Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez when Gonzalez was still a city councilman, and then followed up by campaigning for Jeb Bush's bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination before joining the Williams staff.

"America doesn't give out, America doesn't give in, and we must play this baseball game, if we don't play this baseball game we go home, then they win", Congressman Williams said.

Williams tweeted that Barth is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.

"When I got into the dugout, it wasn't 10 seconds that Zack had come running in from the outfield and ... we landed in each other's arms", Williams said, describing the chaotic scene.

Rep. Williams told reporters on Wednesday that after being shot, Barth continued to use his phone to text in order to get the word out that they were under attack in an attempt to save others.

Williams dove head first to the dugout, where he was joined by Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona staunched Barth's bleeding with his baseball belt.

Barth said by the time he reached the dugout he was bleeding badly but was trying to keep his head down.

Trump has suggested there might be tapes of his encounters with Comey; Comey said last week that "lordy" he hopes there are. He said he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had long discussed their concerns with Comey's job performance.

In the contest for chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans elected Rep. Steve Stivers of OH over Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin.

He credited two U.S. Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail and who shot and wounded Hodgkinson with saving many lives: "There could have easily been 25 or more deaths today". The other officer suffered a minor non-gunshot injury to his ankle.

Williams suffered a sprained ankle as he took cover.

"Americans everywhere should be thankful that this is still the kind of country that still produces these kinds of heroes", he said, adding that he will attend the scheduled baseball game between Republican and Democratic House members tomorrow.

'They saved all of us out there, ' he said, 'There is no question about it'.

The 911 call went out at 7:09 a.m. and the Capitol officers who responded were armed only with pistols, and "taking on a guy with a rifle from 90-120 feet away". "Without them, there would be tremendous loss of life and I probably wouldn't be talking to y'all".

He recounted his colleague Rep. Trent Kelly (R-Miss.) likely being the first person shot at before Scalise was hit in the hip. Scalise, who was visited by President Donald Trump Wednesday evening, has undergone surgery but needs additional operations, the hospital said. The FBI is investigating possible motives around the shooting. Before the shooting, he allegedly asked people gathered there, "Are these the Republicans or the Democrats?".
