US opts out of G7 pledge committing to Paris climate accord

"I expressed Canada's deep disappointment in the decision by the United States to walk away from the global consensus of the Paris agreement during a bilateral meeting with Mr. Pruitt and also at the table of G7 environment ministers", Ms. McKenna told reporters on Monday during a teleconference from Italy.

Two weeks after President Trump announced he'd withdraw from the Paris climate accord, the USA on Monday took its first concrete step toward that end by formally rejecting the agreement on the world stage.

EPA head Scott Pruitt made his global debut on Sunday at a climate conference in Bologna, Italy, but left halfway through the first day of the two-day event.

The statement says that the Paris agreement remains as the global mechanism to effectively and urgently handle climate change and for the adaptation to its effects, while reiterating that it is irreversible and its comprehensive management is crucial for the security and prosperity of the world, societies and economies.

Patricia Espinosa, the United Nations official in charge of implementing the Paris accord, stressed that Trump's pullout would not make any difference in the short-term. "Our collective efforts to act on climate will ensure we maintain the United State's commitment to curb carbon pollution while advancing a clean energy economy that will bring good-paying jobs to America's workers".

In a snipe at the Trump administration, Hendricks" ministry on Friday posted a "fact check' of Trump's speech announcing the US withdrawal from the Paris accord, claiming it contains "blatant fallacies".

As a result, the USA said it would not join those sections of the report on climate and multilateral development banks.

The momentum of existing climate-change efforts and the availability natural gas, wind and solar power mean those loyal to the Paris accord in the US will have an easier time, with emissions expected to fall overall for years, said Robert Perciasepe with the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, who worked with Bloomberg's group on the climate pledge. But other world leaders say that would be impossible.

"We are all looking for American leadership", Solheim said, according to Bloomberg.

He said the other G7 countries hoped to continue constructive dialogue with the United States but insisted on the Paris parameters.

Following the White House's decision to withdraw from Paris, local government officials and businesses have been drawing up their own plans to tackle climate change.

Prior to Trump's announcement, Musk said he had done all he could to persuade Trump on the matter.

Important players in U.S. industry and individual cities and states are already implementing changes aimed at meeting the targets laid down in Paris, where most of the world's countries agreed to try and cap global temperature rises at 2C above pre-industrial levels. Additionally, the meeting also includes the European Union and four invited guests, Chile, Ethiopia, the Maldives, and Rwanda.
