Hawaii Signs Legislation To Implement Goals Of Paris Climate Accord Anyway

Gov. David Ige signed SB 559, which works to expand efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agreement with the worldwide agreement.

The momentum of existing climate-change efforts and the availability natural gas, wind and solar power mean those loyal to the Paris accord in the US will have an easier time, with emissions expected to fall overall for years, said Robert Perciasepe with the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, who worked with Bloomberg's group on the climate pledge.

Ige says Hawaii is the first state to enact legislation implementing parts of the Paris climate agreement.

"We are especially aware of the limits of our natural environment", Ige said before signing the document. "Climate change is real, and Hawaii is seeing it first hand".

Local Hawaii officials also signed a mayors' agreement, which declares the politicians' commitment to support the Paris climate pact.

Less than one-third (32%) of Republicans, however, said they wanted the U.S.to stay in the pact, while 44% said they approved of Trump's decision to leave it.

President Donald Trump says he does not intend for the United States to comply with the agreement in Paris, signed by representatives of 197 countries.

Pyongyang believes the U.S. departure from the agreement is similar to bullishness of its stance on the "nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula".

Senate Bill 559 expands the state's strategies and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Gov. David Ige signed two laws that aim to reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration, a process to store atmospheric carbon monoxide.

Cambodia, a member of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change since 1995, endorsed the Paris deal.

"We do not have a global warming problem on this planet, what we have is an energy poverty problem on this planet". "President Trump may have pulled out of the Paris climate agreement, but Hawaiʻi is on the frontlines of climate impacts and we remain committed to action".

"When we get the LNG ports built in the United States, 20 of which Mr. Obama was holding up the permits for, we'll be able to get that [natural] gas out of the country, improve the balance of our payments, and that will take the pressure off the United States coal industry".
