Sessions to appear before Senate intelligence committee

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Saturday that he plans to testify before the Senate intelligence committee Tuesday, but it was not immediately clear if he would testify in public or private.

Sessions recused or removed himself from the DOJ investigation during the early days of the Trump administration, because he was one of the campaign officials who had met with Russia's ambassador to the United States before the election.

In a statement Thursday, however, the Justice Department said Sessions recused himself in light of his participation in President Donald Trump's campaign, and "it was for that reason, and that reason alone".

Former FBI Director James Comey hinted in his public hearing Thursday that Sessions, a former USA senator from Alabama, may have had additional contacts with Russians, and said in a closed hearing that investigators had received Russian intercepts detailing a possible third meeting between Sessions and Kislyak, sources familiar with the briefing told CNN on Thursday.

"We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an open setting that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic", Comey said.

Think Progress reported that Sessions sent letters to the chairmen of the committees saying that he will send his deputy Rod Rosenstein in his stead.

In January, Sessions was still a senator from the state of Alabama when he appeared at a hearing before his confirmation as attorney general.

Briefing congressional appropriators on the Justice Department's budget is a critical part of the attorney general's job. On May 9, Trump fired Comey upon a recommendation by Sessions.

Sessions has been dogged by questions about possible additional encounters with the ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

Sessions said Saturday that he was accepting an invitation from the Senate intelligence committee, although that was not immediately confirmed.

Despite his recusal, Sessions in May signed a letter to Trump recommending he remove Comey, the man overseeing the investigation into Russian election meddling and the possible Russia-Trump nexus.

With the Russian Federation story spreading, the Justice Department in May appointed former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller, widely respected within both parties, as a special counsel to head a separate Russian Federation probe.

"We on the Intelligence Committee want to know the answers to those questions, and we have begun to request information from the attorney general to allow us to get to the bottom of that".

The CIA claimed Russian Federation deliberately targeted the presidential campaign of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, because it wanted US President Donald Trump to win, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reportedly reached opposite conclusions from the same raw intelligence.
