Child's death in Texas serves as warning about 'dry drowning'

The tragic death of a four-year-old from dry drowning saved the life of another boy who almost died from the same symptoms. Before he passed away, the little boy, Frankie, complained about a stomach ache and diarrhoea, then later complained about pain in his shoulders as well.

"The fluid gets down into the lungs and causes a chemical reaction", said Dr. Alexander, "You'll notice when they're trying to breath you can see their rib cage in between taking breaths".

Doctors say children can die from drowning hours after contact with water, sometimes without showing symptoms first.

Doctors at the hospital confirmed that the little boy succumbed to dry drowning, a rare condition primarily among young children occasioned by breathing in water especially during swimming.

According to the CDC, children one to four have the highest rates of drowning.

CLEVELAND, Ohio- A warning from doctors and a grieving family about the dangers of "dry" and "delayed drowning" after a preschooler died in Harris County, Texas.

"I'm always touching him, and I'm always talking to him when he's sleeping, and all of a sudden he just woke up", Delgado said.

"I walked in. I could see him lying there", said Frankie's mother, Tara Delgado.

They account for about one to two percent of all drowning incidents. "When she came in, she told us it's what's called dry drowning".

Be aware that drowning can happen in any kind of water - bathtubs, toilet bowls, ponds, or small plastic pools.

In dry drowning cases, the water causes vocal chords to spasm and close, shutting off the airway and making it hard to breathe.

"It's very unusual for the child to have absolutely no symptoms, but they may go to bed and in the middle of the night have trouble breathing", Purva told USA Today.

After reading about Delgado's death, a father in Colorado recognized the symptoms in his 2-year-old boy after he had been swimming.

If you think someone is having these symptoms, go to the emergency room, "because time is of the essence when it comes to dry drowning", Higginbotham continued.

A GoFundMe page for Delgado's funeral expenses had raised more than $12,000 by Wednesday. "He was loved by so many people ... the world lost a lovely soul".
