Pope Francis visits Portugal to canonize children who saw Virgin Mary

As the Catholic Church celebrates 100 years of the apparition of Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria, in Fátima, Portugal, on the eve of the Mother's Day celebration, the faithful are encouraged to honor not only their biological mothers but also Mother Mary.

When the pope addressed the journalists, he told them his pilgrimage is a journey "in prayer, in an encounter with the Lord and the holy Mother of God". Jacinta and Francisco have joined the ranks of recognised saints such as Mother Teresa.

The Vatican did not disclose the third secret until 2000.

The Fatima mystery has fascinated Catholics and non-Catholics alike for a century, blending visions of the Virgin, supernatural meteorological events and apocalyptic messages of hell, World War II, communism and the death of a pope.

Fatima attracts millions of worshippers every year for whom the story of apparitions and miracles adds powerful fuel to their faith. He drew a connection between the so-called Bishop in white, Our Lady dressed in white at Fatima, and the white garment that expresses the innocence of little children after their Baptism.

In her message to the three children, Mary brought with her requests for conversion, prayer (particularly the recitation of the Rosary), sacrifices on behalf of sinners, and a three-part secret regarding the fate of the world.

The Pope's comments come after a life-size mural depicting Pope Francis with a saintly halo kissing Mr Trump sprouting devil's horns appeared on a wall near the Vatican.

Generally speaking, the official recognition of visions or miracles follows a long and cautious process, so as not to risk the Church's credibility.

Pope Francis spoke to the 70 journalists on board with him during his May 13 flight from Fatima back to Rome.
