United States official's remark sparks feud with Israel ahead of Trump visit

He spoke in advance of US President Donald Trump's May 22-23 visit to Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

Separately, Israeli officials reacted angrily to reports in local media that representatives of the United States consulate had suggested the Western Wall in east Jerusalem did not belong to Israel.

It continues, "The Republican National Convention's official 2016 Platform rightly stated, 'We recognize Jerusalem as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state and call for the American embassy to be moved there in fulfillment of USA law.' Moreover, we were honored and grateful that you pledged to specifically uphold this policy in response to a request from the American Christian Leaders for Israel (ACLI) coalition during your campaign".

Israel's right-wing had placed high hopes in Trump's presidency following his pledges of ardent support for Israel and a commitment to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed city of Jerusalem.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, National Security Advisor Lt. But the law also allows the president to sign a waiver every six months delaying the move, which is exactly what presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama did.

When asked if he had ruled out some sort of military strike against North Korea, Trump said he did not wish to reveal his plans. Officials and experts, however, claimed that no nation has mastered the necessary technology to follow through with the threat.

"I will do whatever is necessary to facilitate the agreement, to mediate, to arbitrate, anything they'd like to do - but I'd love to be a mediator, or an arbitrator or a facilitator, and we will get this done", the president said.

Netanyahu responded by saying on Monday that "not only would moving the embassy not harm the peace process, but to the contrary". It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognized by the worldwide community. The administration has yet to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, a move that would validate the religious and political significance of the city.

The rival claims to east Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Beit El was established 40 years ago by the founders of Israel's Gush Emunim settlement movement. "I don't think American interests in the Middle East can coexist with his personal feelings about Judea and Samaria - the West Bank". The area, captured by Israel in 1967, is not sovereign Israeli territory and Palestinians there are not Israeli citizens and do not have the right to vote.

Some even called for the end of the idea of a Palestinian state.

With lovely irony, this scripture is about the jubilee year, which occurs every 50 years.

President Trump may be bending over backwards to avoid the appearance of any bias towards Israel, let alone towards the reunification of Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty in the face of widespread rancor from Arab allies over the issue.
