Texas Southern University has canceled a commencement speech by Senator John Cornyn, a high-ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate, which was planned for Saturday.

"I think we need an FBI director with integrity who can lead that agency fairly and impartially - we should not have a Democratic FBI or Republican FBI". He was considered for two U.S. Supreme Court vacancies that went to Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito.

Kelly Ayotte: Ayotte, a former New Hampshire attorney general who lost her seat in the US Senate previous year, has been pushed by some of her Senate colleagues and some Republican advisers to the White House who believe that she would easily be confirmed.

The FBI director is appointed to a 10-year-term (admittedly one that a president can cut short) precisely because he or she is supposed to be independent of any political party.

In an interview with US media, President Trump also accused him being a "showboat" and a "grandstander".

He took the opposite position during the 2016 election, joining fellow Republicans in asking for a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton's use of a private email server for government business.

The petition said Cornyn's backing of DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, among other things, showed that he supported "discriminatory policies and politicians". The Texan makes no bones about the fact that he would like to follow McConnell into the office and become the first Senate majority leader from Texas since Lyndon Johnson. Earlier this week, he dismissed the idea that Trump fired Comey to impede the FBI's Russian Federation probe, terming it a "phony narrative". Graham argued that this was a bad time for the White House to pick any nominee, no matter how qualified, if they were to come with partisan political baggage. But Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, appearing on Meet the Press yesterday, damned his colleague with faint praise, saying Cornyn "under normal circumstances would be a superb choice to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director, but these are not normal circumstances". Although Cornyn remained relatively neutral in last year's election, he hit Trump after video came out in which the presidential contender claimed he kissed women whenever he wanted and grabbed them by the crotch.

Cornyn had also been scheduled to deliver a commencement address on Saturday at the Texas Southern University in Houston, but university officials on Friday cancelled his appearance at the historically black college after a petition signed by hundreds of students protesting his appearance.

"I believe Senator Cornyn would do a great job in anything he is asked to do", Hutchison said in a statement.

"Senator Cornyn was honored to be invited to address TSU's graduates, but he respects the administration's decision and looks forward to continuing to engage with the University in the future", a spokesperson for Cornyn said in a statement.

Officials also spoke with acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, attorney Alice Fisher, federal Judge Henry Hudson and former Homeland Security Adviser Fran Townsend, according to CBS News.
