People console each other as emergency personnel respond to shooting outside Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville, Ohio.

The deceased were the Kirkersville police chief, two employees of the nursing home and the suspected shooter.

A coroner says the OH police chief slain by a gunman who killed two others in a nursing home last week died from a shotgun wound as he exited his vehicle.

The suspect, Thomas Hartless, was found dead inside Pine Kirk Care Center.

Kirkersville Police Department Police Chief Eric Disario responded to reports of a gunman at the building.

The Friday killings happened about 25 miles (39 kilometers) east of Columbus.

Spokeswoman Jill Del Greco, of the OH attorney general's office, said investigators had more interviews planned and learning more about the connection between Hartless and Medrano is part of their efforts.

Investigators released little new information over the weekend. They report Hartless has a criminal record which dates back to an assault in 1992 and includes three domestic violence charges. He also served time for a 2009 abduction of another woman.

"I am afraid to be alone with him, that he will hurt me for good", Medrano wrote in her latest petition this month. Court records show Medrano had reported injuries including a concussion and cuts requiring stitches.

In a December police report, she told how he had threatened to murder her and bury her in a grave that he had already dug.

Connie Long lives across the street from Hartless' parents' home, where he often stayed in Utica.

"Once the shot was sacked at the chief, the two hostages took off running", Thorp said. He was a father of six, with another child on the way.

Two people outside the facility were also held hostage during the incident but were unharmed, authorities said.

"I believe the last radio transmission we had from (Disario) was that he had the subject in sight", Thorp said. As always, we are thankful to the first responders who acted to keep residents of the nursing home safe and to protect the surrounding community.
