Alonso's engine fails in practice for Barcelona GP

"I like this Formula 1 so my intention and first priority is to race here next year and I want to win".

Alonso and McLaren are having a wretched 2017. Hamilton lowered his own best lap time after lunch, with Bottas only 0.090 seconds slower.

Honda is still investigating the exact cause of Alonso's failure, and its F1 engine chief Yusuke Hasegawa explained that an order for the Spaniard to stop the vehicle after telemetry data showed a warning came too late.

Teams showed off their updates to the cars in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix today, as well as refreshed paintwork that more visibly displays the drivers names and numbers.

"It wasn't the ideal end, but considering the morning we had, I think it was a really good recovery", Vettel said about his second-best time.

McLaren are yet to score a point in four races.

It's the first time that I've had a Friday this season without any big problems - we ran through our programme without any big issues, so that was good.

But on the other hand, there are clubs like "Phoenix" or "San Antonio", which only once in the "regular" played overtime. Bookmaker offices, as a rule, estimate the probability of a draw with coefficients from 10.00 to 15.00.

Alonso said he has no regrets about skipping Monaco, as even if he repeated his stirring performance of Barcelona, the top three teams will remain ahead of McLaren-Honda on the prestigious streets.

Alonso is out of contract at the end of this season and has said he wants to stay in F1 if he can find a auto that will allow him to fight at the front.

But, incredibly, the 35-year-old Spaniard dragged his McLaren not only into the final phase of qualifying - a first for the British team this season - but then to seventh on the grid for Sunday's grand prix in front of his home fans, too.

He said he still did not know what had happened in Sochi when his engine failed on the formation lap. Rumor has it that he could return to Renault, with which he won his two world championships over a decade ago, or that he could take Kimi Raikkonen's place alongside Sebastian Vettel back at Ferrari again.

You'd think they'd have plenty of opportunities in the vehicle, but not this year on this team. "It was tricky for us", Hamilton said.

Practice will resume on Saturday before qualifying for Sunday's race.

Having got his first taste of driving the auto this month, the 35-year-old is looking forward to getting to grips with things as the intensity ramps up.
