Students choose NDP in mock election

WATCH: Alberta Premier Rachel Notley chose her words carefully reacting to the uncertain vote results in B.C. Tuesday.

British Columbia was facing the prospect of a minority government after a fiercely contested provincial election, raising the possibility the nascent Green Party will hold sway over multi-billion-dollar energy projects.

No matter how diplomatic Weaver can be, this is not a relationship that can work for long.

"What a historic day for British Columbia", he said.

However, the Greens' and New Democrats' stance on electoral reform may be a deal breaker with the Liberals, Harrison said.

The NDP campaign stepped up its attack on the Greens in the final days, warning voters that the NDP is the only party that could end the B.C. Liberal dynasty. The Liberals would increase the carbon tax to $50 a tonne by 2020. The Liberal legislator from Burnaby North, near the proposed terminus, went down to a thumping defeat.

Weaver, at his celebration on Vancouver Island, said he had talked with both Clark and Horgan.

Weaver, in a speech to a cheering crowd south of Vancouver, pledged to work so "that the benefits of a strong economy should flow to all of us, not just a privileged few".

The usually affable Horgan led an aggressive campaign to bring his party's seats within two of the Liberals, showing he is not above getting dirty in the political trenches to secure victory.

Polls opened at 8 a.m. and Green Leader Andrew Weaver was among the first in line at a middle school in his Victoria-area constituency of Oak Bay-Gordon Head, surrounded by excited students.

"We have won the popular vote, and we have won the most seats, and with absentee ballots still to be counted, I am confident they will strengthen our margin of victory", said Clark.

The British Columbia Green Party holds the balance of power in the province, having elected three MLAs, with the B.C Liberals winning 43 seats and the NDP earning 41.

All three major party leaders say they're willing to work with the assembly voters have elected.

When asked whether she plans on staying in the political spotlight, McCulloch said it's likely, in one capacity or another.

"Whatever happens, happens. I'm looking forward to seeing what the results are", he said. Regardless of the outcome of the last riding, no party would be able to win the 44 seats necessary to govern with a majority in the 87-seat legislature.

In the meantime, pollster Shachi Kurl has some advice for the B.C. party leaders.

Still, Weaver does not appear to like the New Democrats' leader, John Horgan. The NDP has promised to ban the donations, while the Liberals have said they'll convene a panel to review them.

"It was a tough fought election", Trudeau said on his way into the weekly federal Liberal caucus meeting.

An NDP government in B.C., bolstered by the Greens, is not the preferred option.

Notley supports the Kinder Morgan-led Trans Mountain development, a project that has faced blowback in some parts of B.C. Construction of the pipeline expansion is expected to begin in September.

The LNG industry is a nonstarter, he told reporters later. "If they're the ones who vote and they're the ones who suffer most because of poor health care, gosh, if I was a politician, I'd make damn sure I buttered that bread".

One of Clark's surprise moves during the campaign was to pledge to ban or tax out of viability US thermal coal exports through B.C. ports in retaliation for USA duties on softwood lumber.
