North Korea accuses US, South Korea of assassination attempt

North Korea's Ministry of State Security claimed agents paid an overseas North Korean laborer in the eastern Russian Federation to detonate a bomb with "radioactive" and "nano poisonous" substances when he attended a military parade in Pyongyang.

Reclusive North Korea warned this week that United States hostility had brought the region to the brink of nuclear war.

The North Korean news agency did not mention how the alleged plot was busted nor it mentioned the name of the North Korean suspect.

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of conspiring to assassinate leader Kim Jong-un amid heightened tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

The Ministry of State Security alleges the agencies "ideologically corrupted and bribed a North Korean citizen surnamed Kim" to orchestrate the attack - paying him tens of thousands of dollars. South Korea and Malaysia say it was an assassination carried out by the North. Officials in Seoul said the statue claim was "completely false". The North regularly issues threats of military action without following through on them.

The North Korean statement said the plan had "been put into the extremely serious phase of implementation". North Korea has repeatedly demanded their return.

North Korean commandos infiltrated Seoul in January 1968 in a failed attempt to assassinate its then leader Park Chung-Hee.

That criminal investigation is ongoing, according to people familiar with the matter. Uber claimed its own technology was significantly different.

South Korea said the workers chose to resettle in the South on their own.

Kim Jong-un is reported to be on the verge of launching military strikes against South Korea.

In fact, the USA and North Korea's relationship has become so strained that China - North Korea's main ally - told the two countries to "stop irritating each other". Repeated calls to South Korea's National Intelligence Service seeking comment went unanswered. North Korea often uses colourful language and is no stranger to extravagant claims.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo was in South Korea this week, conducting "detailed security discussions" with his South Korean counterpart and visiting an island near the border between the North and South, the USA military command in South Korea said in a statement Tuesday. Thousands of USA soldiers are stationed in South Korea and Japan.

The chemical attack was due to be carried out during a public parade. Kim watched a military parade in the North Korean capital on April 15 as part of celebrations marking the 105th anniversary of North Korea's founding.

Analysts concur that a possible suspension of China's oil exports would have a major impact on North Korea, but they are more inclined to believe that China would not use its biggest punitive measure as leverage over North Korea-a total oil embargo-if Pyongyang is carrying out low-intensity provocations.
