The day is often referred to as Mexico's Independence Day, but that holiday actually falls in September. The Mexican Independence Day fight tradition can be traced back to Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., who helped make it an annual event from 1991-1995 with fights against Lonnie Smith, Hector Camacho, Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor and David Kamou.

There isn't necessarily anything wrong with eating enchiladas and downing some drinks on May 5 - especially if you're at a Mexican-owned restaurant. There will also be food specials on tacos, nachos, ceviche, quesadillas and chips & guacamole.

The U.S drinks twice as much tequila on Cinco de Mayo than Mexico does.

NYLO New York City hotel, 2178 Broadway, is celebrating the holiday in a different way with a Frida Kahlo-inspired cocktail. In the 1970's and 1980's, beer companies targeted the Spanish-speaking population with ad campaigns that encouraged people to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and party.
