Fuel bunks to shut on Sundays in seven states, Puducherry

PM Modi's call for oil conservation and environmental protection in his recent "Mann ki baat" has had such an impact on Indian petroleum dealers that they have chose to keep the petrol pumps shut in eight states on Sundays. In next few weeks, a general body meeting will take place to discuss the agreement that the PSU oil companies had signed with it in November previous year to consider their demand for raising fuel margins.

He said the association's decision was made in view of the prime minister's call during his recent "Man ki baat" programme to conserve oil to save the environment.

Murali said petrol bunks in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Haryana and Maharashtra as well as Puducherry will down their shutters on Sundays starting from May 14. "While exact figures are not available on sales on Sundays, it will be around 20 per cent less", he said.

Facebook out to read minds
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg used the developer conference to talk about making the first augmented reality camera. Interestingly, Facebook has revealed plans to develop a new type of smartphone capable of reading people's minds.

He said there were around 4,850 outlets selling petrol and diesel in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry alone.

"Major dealers' federations have clarified that they don't endorse any closure of petrol pumps on any day", the oil ministry tweeted.

The decision will also be communicated to the oil supplying companies soon, he said almost 20,000 outlets will be closed on the holiday. He added, "We are within our right to declare Sunday a holiday". However, oil marketing companies (OMCs) had requested the owner body to reconsider its decision. While this is essentially a move to curb operational costs, KP Murali, the president of the Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association says otherwise. "All these days we have been functioning paying workers double wages", he said. Kumar said the fuel outlets which normally have about 15 staff each would have one staff member on the holidays to provide fuel if there was an emergency situation. From May 14, petrol pump dealers in seven states and Puducherry will shut shop on Sundays, it was announced on Tuesday.
