According to the Fresno Bee, he dove to the ground and yelled "Allahu Akhbar" before he was taken into custody.

"What we know is that this was a random act of violence", Dyer said, adding that it's too soon to determine whether the shootings were acts of terrorism.

The imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno was quick to denounce the killings, and said the suspect was not a member of the religious organization, according to WEAU.

Muhammad, 39, will face four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, officials said.

The victims of the shooting have not yet been identified.

All three victims in Tuesday's killings were white. Muhammad made other statements to police, but he did not disclose what they were. He was already wanted for a separate killing from last week, in which a Motel 6 security guard in Fresno was gunned down.

Dyer told reporters that the three people were shot minutes apart in close proximity in areas around the downtown area of Fresno.

The suspect then encountered a resident in the neighborhood, who he shot at multiple times but missed, Dyer said.

Two of those shot at were near Catholic Charities and were clients of the social services agency, Dyer said.

Ashlee Wolf of Catholic Charities told the Fresno Bee newspaper ( that the shooting happened at a bus stop near the charity.

County offices were placed on lockdown and people were urged to shelter in place during the shooting. Few other details were immediately known.
