Dr. Carlo Bava, Morano's doctor, told The Associated Press that despite hardships, she has maintained a serene attitude, that, along with genetics, may help explain her longevity.

He said he had last seen Ms Morano, who was just 12-years-old when the Titanic sank, on Friday when "she thanked me and held my hand", as she did every time he called on her.

Emma Morano was born on November 29, 1899 in the Piedmont region of Italy.

The world's oldest person, Emma Morano, has died at her home in northern Italy.

Her life not only spanned three centuries but also survived an abusive marriage, the loss of her only son, two World Wars and more than 90 Italian governments.

Dr Bava, who also lives in Verbania, had been her doctor for almost a quarter of a century.
