Obama, who developed a close working relationship with Merkel during eight years in the Oval Office, visited Berlin in November as part of his last foreign tour before handing over to President Donald Trump.

The two will participate in "Being Involved in Democracy: Taking on Responsibility Locally and Globally", which is sponsored by both the German Protestant Kirchentag and the Obama Foundation.

Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, Germany's top Lutheran bishop, said Obama's participation 'underlines how internationally we are celebrating 500 years of the Reformation'.

Obama visited Germany six times as president, but he captured the hearts and minds of Germans before he was even elected.

The Gunners sit sixth in the table, seven points adrift of fourth-place Manchester City now with just one game in hand on Pep Guardiola's side.

"President Barack Obama's attending the Kirchentag in Berlin, which will ring in the Reformation Summer, underlines the worldwide character of our 500th anniversary celebrations", Bedford-Strohm said in a statement.

Just weeks before signing a lucrative book contract that will pay him and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, a whopping $60million for two memoirs, the Obamas were seen kicking back on Richard Branson's Necker Island, the billionaire's secluded getaway in the British Virgin Islands. "Anyone who is pious also has to be politically minded". "I am looking forward to enthusiastic debates during the Reformation Summer 2017".

His appearance, however, is scheduled to coincide with the first day of President Trump's own first state trip to Europe, an overlap that could invite further scrutiny of the current President's trip. "As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any US citizen".

In any case, Merkel's strong showing should be welcomed by Washington-if only because her rival is already signaling that he would be less than cooperative with the Trump administration.
