Airstrikes on Syria might also send message to North Korea

"We agreed that North Korea's missile launch yesterday was a risky provocation and a serious threat to Japan's national security".

The National Security Council has presented President Trump with options in response to North Korea's nuclear program that include placing American nuclear weapons in South Korea, NBC News reported on Friday.

The much anticipated summit between the leaders of the world's two biggest economies will put North Korea center stage, reflecting the U.S. President's recent comments about the regime.

The North, who had home advantage and are ranked 10th in the world by Federation Internationale de Football Association to the South's 17th, were favourites to win. North Korea could also have used its latest missile launch to show that it won't back down to pressures by the Trump administration.

South Korea has been developing ballistic missiles with a 500-mile range since 2012, the Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman said.

North Korea's saber-rattling comes as no surprise since the country has a habit of threatening to bomb the United States and its allies.

For many, the competition was a rare opportunity to see a divided Korea united once again.

Earlier this week US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Florida, where Trump pressed his counterpart to do more to curb North Korea's nuclear program.

It is unclear whether the two leaders have actually discussed the issue yet, but the AP wrote that, ahead of dinner, Trump said he and Xi already had a long discussion and "developed a friendship", after which he joked, "I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing".

Agreeing to negotiate directly with North Korea would signal a drastic shift from former President Barack Obama's policy in dealing with the provocative nation.

A missile fired by North Korea into the Sea of Japan span out of control and the test ended in a "fiery crash", a senior U.S. defence official has said.

The following is a timeline of North's Korea's nuclear and missile tests. The Pentagon will hold its first missile intercept test in almost three years next month: the latest sign that the Trump administration is taking Kim Jong Un's ongoing threats against Washington seriously, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

Placing nuclear weapons in South Korea will be the first nuclear deployment overseas since the end of the Cold War, NBC noted.

Last year, Pyongyang carried out two nuclear tests and over two dozen of test launches using ballistic missile technology.

"US Pacific Command is fully committed to working closely with our Republic of Korea and Japanese allies to maintain security", the military command in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region said.

"If this is the KN-15, North Korea is refining their solid fuel capabilities", says David Schmerler, a research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

A USA official said Wednesday's missile test ended in failure when the rocket spun out of control and plunged into the ocean.
