4 convicts found dead in SC dorm

Guards found the four men at 10:35 a dorm at Kirkland Correctional Institution, a state maximum security site outside Columbia that holds approximately 15,000 offenders, said Sommer Sharpe.

Authorities say four inmates have been found dead at a SC prison.

Denver Jordan Simmons, 35, of Flintstone, Ga., and Jacob Theophilus Philip, 25, of Summerville each are charged with four counts of murder, State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said.

In the deaths of King, Kelley and Scruggs, Simmons and Philip are accused with strangling each to death. It says they lured the inmates into the cell where they were strangled and beaten with a broomstick.

Mental Health Group calls for improved support networks, awareness on mental health
The report surveys worldwide mental health and points to mental health issues as a serious public health threat. Saxena says treatment usually involves psychotherapy, antidepressant medication or a combination of both.

SLED is leading the investigation, Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said in a statement.

Kirkland Correctional Institution is a level 3 prison that houses inmates considered to be the most unsafe and violent offenders sentenced in the state. Both men were already serving life sentences for previous murders.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts had not released the official cause of death as of the early morning hours of Saturday. Philip has no disciplinary actions against him in almost two years in state prison. The inmates housed in the unit are considered the most unsafe and violent offenders sentenced in the state. Scheduled release date: October 6, 2020. Before male inmates 17 and older are assigned to a prison across the state, all start there.

Philip was arrested in 2013 for the killings of his 26-year-old girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter in Berkeley County, according to reports by WCIV. The officers were charged with attempted murder and misconduct in public office, CNN affiliate WIS reported.
