South braces for stormy day expected to bring tornado risk

The agency had tornado watches, which means that conditions are favorable for severe weather, for a broad area stretching from the Florida Panhandle up into Indiana.

Alabama's governor declared a state of emergency because of the threat, resulting in multiple school closures, and schools in SC planned to dismiss classes early.

Threats from the storm include 60 miles per hour wind gust and quarter-size hail, according to the weather service.

The waves of storms could produce destructive and long-trek tornadoes as well as baseball size hail and damaging winds.

A third round will develop this evening through 9 p.m.

"As a result, those areas affected by the strongest thunderstorms could receive structural damage, downed trees and subsequent power outages", according to the National Weather Service bulletin.

Emlaw says he isn't aware of any tornadoes developing from this system yet, but said such storms are unpredictable.

A line of elevated storms are possible Wednesday morning around sunrise. There's also a chance for isolated tornadoes and hail, National Weather Service meteorologist Matthew Sena told CNN.

The thunderstorms are likely to increase in coverage and intensity Thursday morning. Several school systems across the state have already announced that they are closing in advance of the weather event.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley declared a state of emergency Tuesday evening and said it would last until the severe weather in the state subsides.

Leon County School's outdoor after school and sports activities have been canceled in anticipation of severe weather, according to a release from the district.

Severe thunderstorms, damaging hail and winds, and even tornadoes are possible across the southeast.

Six Flags Over Georgia was closed for the day and, in Augusta, the Masters Par-3 Contest - the traditional kick-off of the major golf tournament - was facing postponement due to the storms.
