Braves Bullpen blows up in 7th inning, Atlanta drops Season Opener

Hansel Robles came in and shut the Braves down in the top of the seventh before the Mets finally broke through with their first runs of the year in the bottom of the frame.

The Mets enjoyed a solid Opening Day win today on the back of a strong performance from starter Noah Syndergaard.

Julio Teheran started for the Braves and pitched six scoreless innings and had six strikeouts.

Teheran pitched six scoreless innings but the Mets blew the game open with six runs in the five-walk seventh, scoring first on a challenged and reversed call, then opening the floodgates against relievers who couldn't throw strikes, to the delight of a sellout crowd of 44,384.

Making his first opening-day start for Texas, Yu Darvish had a 5-1 lead behind Rougned Odor, who homered twice and drove in four runs in his first two at-bats since a new contract last week that the Rangers sealed with two horses. Over the course of 183.2 innings of work from 2016, he produced a 2.60 ERA, 14-9 record and one hold. But the Dickey addition meant the Braves needed someone who could handle the unpredictable pitch, as well.

Neil Walker and Jay Bruce each walked, with Bruce's walk forcing home a run, before Lucas Duda laced a three-run double.

Days before the first pitch, a Quinnipiac University poll showed NY baseball fans preferred the Mets over the Yankees, 45% to 43%. Asdrubal Cabrera then singled up the middle. Flowers fielded the throw behind the plate and had to reach to get to Flores, the difference in a would-be out.

The 25th opening day at Camden Yards produced a dramatic contest that began in the late afternoon and ended at dusk (see full story).

Cubs, Maddon become first to use no-pitch intentional walk
ESPN will exclusively televise the Chicago Cubs home-opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, April 10, at 8 p.m. "We were picked by everyone under the sun to win past year , too", team president Theo Epstein said.

While it is easy to focus on the bullpen's failure and losing the game Matt Kemp deserves an equal amount of blame in the seasons first loss. At the plate, Mets fans have to be encouraged by Jay Bruce's patient approach at the plate. Duda said. "I just made a decision to be aggressive and it paid off".

Rene Rivera led off the seventh with a single against Ian Krol (0-1).

Teheran, a two-time All-Star, is scheduled to pitch his fourth consecutive season opener. But there are some new health concerns for the team's pitching staff - though their gravity isn't yet clear.

Mets: In their comments to reporters, RHP Seth Lugo seemed optimistic about a fairly quick return from the DL, while it appears LHP Steven Matz will be sidelined for some time.

The reaction was similar to Syndergaard's response previous year when he bristled over the incessant speculation about a bone spur in his right elbow.

NOTES: RHP Bartolo Colon, a fan favorite with the Mets from 2014-16, makes his Braves debut Wednesday night at Citi Field. He was in uniform for pregame introductions and received a warm hand.

HOUSTON - Dallas Keuchel worked seven shutout innings, and George Springer and Carlos Correa backed him with solo home runs as Houston claimed a shutout victory over Seattle in the season opener at Minute Maid Park. "Some of these guys don't know Major League Baseball without him in it", Snitker said.
