Dozens reportedly killed in gas attack in Syria

McCain called for Trump - who is yet to comment on what happened Tuesday - to say "we're going to arm the Free Syrian Army, we're going to dedicate ourselves to the removal of Bashar Assad, we're going to have the Russians pay a price for their engagement".

Damascus has repeatedly denied using such weapons.

The Idlib Media Center says dozens of people died of suffocation while the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group put the death toll at 35 on Tuesday.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that Russian planes had not carried out air strikes on Idlib. The Observatory said medical sources in the town reported symptoms among the affected including fainting, vomiting and foaming at the mouth.

A joint investigation by the United Nations and the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog determined the Syrian government was behind at least three attacks in 2014 and 2015 involving chlorine gas and that the Islamic State group was responsible for at least one, involving mustard gas.

A gas attack has reportedly taken place in Syria's rebel-held Idlib, killing at least 58 people, with various media outlets reporting that a rocket has since hit a hospital treating the victims. Kayal said he and other witnesses took victims to an emergency room, and removed their clothes and washed them in water. "Israel calls on the worldwide community to fulfill promises made in 2013, and to remove chemical weapons from Syria", Netanyahu said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin condemned the suspected chemical attack in northwestern Syria as an "inhuman" strike that could endanger peace talks in the Kazakh capital.

The activists had no details on what agent could have been used in the assault.

Syria's leading opposition group, the National Coalition, accused the "regime of the criminal Bashar" of being behind the attack.

UN Security Council Resolution 2118 was passed after a massive chemical weapons attack that killed hundreds in several opposition areas around Damascus in 2013.

The incident occurred a day before a major global meeting scheduled to be held in Brussels on Syria.

"The toll continues to increase as do the strikes in the Idlib region as well as non-chemical attacks in Hama", the group said.

Last year, a UN-appointed investigation panel found that chemical weapons were used by regime forces and opposition fighters in 2014 and 2015.

Over 3000,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-government protests.
