Apple Revamps Mac Pro, Announces Broader Desktop Overhaul

Looks like it's damage control time in Cupertino.

The next generation of Mac Pros will be modular, with pro displays helping the device become, what Apple hopes to be, the company's "highest-end, high-throughput desktop system, designed for our demanding pro customers". They aren't shipping, however, this year.

"I think we designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner, if you will, ' Mr Federighi said, adding that the Mac Pro's set-up then became 'fairly hard to adjust".

Apple also said during a roundtable with journalists in the USA that it was "sorry" to Mac Pro users who may have felt neglected, with the desktop having not been updated since its launch in 2013.

"We have big plans for the iMac", the company's senior vice president of worldwide marketing said in during a round table discussion at Apple's Machine Shop hardware prototyping lab. No USB-C, no Thunderbolt 3 (and so no support for the LG UltraFine 5K display).

After endless campaigns by the likes of influencers like MKNHD and the entire Apple fan-base collective, there is finally some good news for those who have been waiting for an upgrade to the Mac Pro - it is happening.

Apple on Tuesday updated its Mac Pro, the tubular desktop computer that ships without a display, for the first time since December 2013.

The 2013 Mac Pro was controversial right from the jump. A lot's happened since then: new CPUs and GPUs have debuted, memory has gotten much faster, and storage prices fell even as performance rose. As such, the new iMac will be getting a spec increase created to make it even more attractive to pros, as the company works to rethink the Mac for 2018. The Mac Pro is, for all practical purposes, a almost four year old snapshot in time. We can give you the specifics on that. "Please. Really, were going to fix this".

In any case, that new modular Mac Pro won't be arriving in 2017, and Apple was cagey about whether it would arrive in 2018.

Just what those configurations will entail, Apple won't yet say. Now you won't see any of those products this year; we're in the process of that. Most of the people who use desktops will buy iMacs, Apple revealed.

After Apple failed to announce new Mac desktops at last year's MacBook Pro with Touch Bar unveiling, some critics charged Apple with ignoring professional customers who need the additional power the Mac Pro offers. It may also stem from an understanding that the product line has an importance to Apple's business that goes beyond its direct revenue impact.

The delay appears to be the result of the design of the Mac Pro, which was praised for its technological achievement but had an innovative shape that meant new components couldn't be added to it.
