Army Jawan arrested with grenades at Srinagar Airport

An army man was arrested with two grenades at Srinagar airport by Jammu and Kashmir police's anti-hijacking squad on Monday.

It was during the baggage check when police found two grenades in his luggage. "He is being questioned; we are not taking his claim at face value", a police source said. Later, the Jawan revealed that he was carrying the grenades for "catching fish" by carrying blast in the river.

Armyman was trying to board a flight to Delhi from Srinagar.

Mukhiya is with the 17 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles.

One of the killed civilian was identified as Zahid Rashid Bhat, 22, the sole earning member of a family with six sisters. A separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.

The rifleman was whisked away and shifted to police station Humhama for questioning. "We have filed an FIR in the case and there will be necessary action against the solider", he said. "As per due process of law, the Army will take action against the individual", Army spokesman Rajesh Kalia told local news agency.

On whether it was a hijacking bid, Vaid declined to comment.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah said that recovery of grenades from a soldier tells a wide story of problem of unaccounted weapons and ammunition.

Srinagar is one of the most heavily guarded airports in the country, with an elaborate security drill in place.
