Mexican state attorney arrested at border … for drug smuggling

His hearing is scheduled for April 11, when it will be decided if he will face charges in NY, where El Chapo is now being held.

US Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ralph DeSio told the San Diego Union Tribune Veytia had been arrested at the Cross Border Xpress, the bridge which connects San Diego to Tijuana airport. He was taken into custody on Monday in San Diego by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security Investigations, acting on an arrest warrant, an FBI spokeswoman in San Diego said.

The charges against Veytia deal with various conspiracies aimed at importing, trafficking, and distributing marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines, and heroin.

The arrest is a blow for Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto and his Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) party, which governs Nayarit and is reeling from corruption scandals. No further details of his arrest or court appearance were immediately released.

But business advocates and critics of federal oversight argueconsumers ought to be free to make their own decisions. The White House had earlier said that the new USA president strongly supported the repeal of the rules.

The nature and scope of the alleged conspiracy were not specified in the indictment. Led by Nemesio Oseguera, also known as El Mencho, it's one of Mexico's newest and fastest growing cartels and it operates in Nayarit. That state is considered to be one of the safe havens for the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, (CJNG) an offshoot of the Sinaloa Cartel that in recent years has grown exponentially.

United States authorities captured a Mexican state's attorney general accused of being part of a drug trafficking ring, a rare case of a prosecutor being directly involved in the smuggling of narcotics into the United States.

A 2011 failed assassination attempt against Veytia was linked to the Sinaloas.
