He also went on reject the president's claims that the Obama administration "wiretapped" Trump Tower previous year, saying, "Let me be clear: we know there was not a wiretap on Trump Tower".

More than a dozen top lawmakers and intelligence officials have now said there's no evidence to support President Trump's tweet alleging that former President Obama wiretapped him.

It is unclear if Trump sent out the tweet or ordered it.

Video of that exchange was soon posted on the president's official Twitter account, @POTUS, which is managed by Trump's former caddy and current social media director, Dan Scavino. There's no evidence to back up that suggestion, either.

FBI Director James Comey found a way to do just that while testifying before the House Intelligence Committee on Monday.

"There was circumstantial evidence of collusion; there is direct evidence, I think, of deception", Schiff said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

The pushback followed a daylong House intelligence committee hearing where Comey and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers testified.

The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the Department of Justice and all its components: "the department has no information that supports those tweets", he said.

Democrat senator Mr Schiff said there was "no crime" in Mr Trump or his aides having legitimate connections with Russian interests.

A White House official told CNN as the hearing was ongoing that "nothing has changed" based on revelations from Comey's testimony.

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the committee, said it's important to determine the extent of Russia's involvements and whether they were aided by USA citizens, "including people associated with the Trump campaign". "Obama's Central Intelligence Agency director said so. There's even been stories written about it in - in numerous newspapers talking about how they said - they [the Obama administration] left breadcrumbs around to hurt the Trump administration". How are we investigating them and how do we prevent them in the future?
