Dame Vera Lynn: The Forces' Sweetheart turns 100

Dame Vera Lynn is a national musical treasure who celebrates her 100th birthday on March 20th, 2017.

It is not the first time Lynn has broken records.

"Celebrating Dame Vera's birthday is the flawless opportunity to let everyone share memories and have some fun".

On her role of helping to boost the morale of troops, she said: "It was wonderful to be able to do something in those times", adding: "I'm glad it helped them to hold on to home".

"Dame Vera Lynn has written a number of iconic songs which many residents are likely to have grown up listening to".

Lynn was known as the "Forces Sweetheart" for her optimistic wartime anthems, including "We'll Meet Again".

Standing beneath it at the private event will be war veterans, WWII re-enactors, 1940s singers and supporters of Dame Vera Lynn's Children's Charity.

She recalled: "I remember hundreds of German planes flying over on a lovely sunny day, and my mum pushing us three kids and the dog into the shelter, and putting a mattress over us".

But not Bluffs: JC Penney announces 4 Iowa stores to close
The closest locations slated for closing are in the Columbia Mall in Bloomsburg and Bradford Towne Center in Towanda. Officials with the Texas-based J-C Penney Company are announcing the closure of 138 stores, including four in Iowa.

A 350ft image of Dame Vera, who is affectionately known as The Forces' Sweetheart, will also mark the release of her new album, Vera Lynn 100.

The record features re-orchestrations of some of her most famous songs including We'll Meet Again and (There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover.

Throughout her career, Lynn has been recognised with various awards.

She also now holds the record for being the oldest living artist to get a top 20 United Kingdom album. The one-off spectacular raised funds for her children's charity and features Armstrong and singers Blake and Hayley Westenra.

The chart spot will mean Dame Vera, who has turned 100, will beat her own record as the oldest living artist to reach the top 20.

Speaking of her achievements, Lynn said, "It is an unprecedented honour to have my birthday marked in such a attractive way and I am truly thrilled by this wonderful gesture".

The singer also celebrated the milestone by releasing a new album, becoming the first person to do so at the age of 100.
