By the early afternoon there were about a dozen protesters, many carrying Confederate flags, across the street from the arena's main entrance.

NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt quickly issued a statement about the presence of the flags.

For more than a decade, the NCAA refused to host major championship events in SC because of the Confederate flag's presence on Statehouse grounds in Columbia.

'We are committed to assuring that our events are safe and accessible to all.

The statement continues: "No symbols that compromise that commitment will be permitted to be displayed on venue property that the tournament controls".

A small group of protesters marred the return of the NCAA men's basketball tournament to the state of SC.

Video posted on Twitter on Sunday by Sports Illustrated writer Jonathan Jones showed several trucks driving on a road and waving flags.

Johnathan Bragg, a police information officer for the Greenville police department, told SB Nation that no arrests were made in connection with the flag protests.

Meanwhile, Texas and any other state contemplating parallel legislation to North Carolina's exclusionary dictum are staring down the same NCAA repercussions.

But it removed them from the state over its HB2 bill, which limits protections offered to LGBT people and relocating to Greenville. However, the NCAA has said it will no longer host postseason events there until the state repeals its controversial bathroom bill, which requires transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to the gender listed on their birth certificate.

SC won this weekend's Greenville Regional after the NCAA chose to pull all tournament games out of North Carolina as a result of that state's so-called bathroom bill, which requires transgender individuals to use the public restroom that corresponds to the gender on their birth certificates.

"The NCAA is proud and excited to host championships in the state of SC once again", the NCAA's Dan Gavitt said in an emailed release.

Tickets remain for regionals at the NCAA's seven other regional sites.

That led the NAACP and others to turn out for a march to the arena steps in support of taking down the flag. This renouncement, and the subsequent removal of all confederate flags from state property, was a direct result of the Dylan Roof shootings in Charleston.

State lawmakers voted to remove the flag in July 2015 and the NCAA lifted its sanctions. Roof was sentenced to death for his actions 2016.

Some basketball fans said the Confederate flag shouldn't be there. "You think we all agree on everything?" They say the wanted to make sure if the flag tipped over, that it wouldn't hurt anyone.
