Pastor discovers 706-carat diamond in village

All Fr. Momoh is admitting is he discovered a 706-carat alluvial diamond in Yakadu village in Sierra Leone. In 1972, the 968.9-carat Star of Sierra Leone was found by miners and sold for about $2.5 million.

According to a report on BBC, Pastor Momoh discovered the diamond, weighing 706 carats in Kono district, Sierra Leone.

The president thanked the chief of the Tankoro area where the stone was found for not smuggling it out of the country.

The presidential spokesman said in statement that the diamond has not yet been valued.

Koroma emphasised the importance of selling the diamond in Sierra Leone and assured the country that the selling process would be transparent and the diamond would be sold to the highest bidder.

He has turned the diamond over to the government in hopes that it will be used to fuel development.

Reportedly, the diamond in the top 20 of largest diamonds ever discovered. The government plans to auction it.

Historically, Sierra Leone has had a controversial role in the diamond industry.

However, a polished stone cut from the Jonker, which is the 10th largest gem-diamond ever recovered until now at 726 carats, will go on sale in Hong Kong in May.

It's easy to be cynical about the situation, and the fate of the proceeds gleaned from the diamond, but there may be reason for optimism. That civil war left an estimated 120,000 dead.

For individuals growing up in Sierra Leone becoming an artisan miner is just the natural thing to do.

That gem is second in size only to the 3,106- carat uncut Cullinan diamond which was unearthed in South Africa in 1905.

In May previous year, mining firm Lucara sold a 813-carat diamond for £51m at an auction in London.
