UNCW's Kevin Keatts reportedly meeting with NC State about head coaching vacancy

UNCW's Kevin Keatts reportedly meeting with NC State about head coaching vacancy

The Cardinals won the 2013 national championship while Keatts was an assistant. They narrowly lost to Duke in the first round past year, and fell 76-71 against Virginia on Thursday as a No. 12 seed.

Kevin Keatts won't have to go too far from UNC Wilmington for his new job, as he's been hired as the head coach of NC State, according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

Keatts will replace Mark Gottfried, who coached for six seasons.

Things broke bad in the last two seasons, though.

Gottfried was sacked earlier this month after the Wolfpack failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, including a 15-17 (4-14 ACC) record this season.

The 44-year-old Keatts will now have to battle against the likes of Duke and North Carolina on a consistent basis.

Keatts inherits a Wolfpack roster that loses freshman point guard Dennis Smith, senior center BeeJay Anya and possibly fifth-year senior shooting guard Terry Henderson. This year's bad team only had two senior rotation players, so a lot of talent should be back.

NC State reportedly has found a replacement for head coach Mark Gottfried.

UNCW signed Keatts to a contract extension that would keep him with the Seahawks through the 2021 season.
