Kentucky native nominated for James Beard cookbook award

The finalists of the James Beard Foundation Awards were announced this afternoon and one familiar face has been named to the shortlist for Best Chef Southwest.

On the national level, Aaron Silverman's prix fixe Pineapple and Pearls is among the finalists for Best New Restaurant. It should be emphasized that both chefs have other highly regarded restaurants, and in Lee's case, In Situ and Benu are nominees in other categories.

Book and media winners will be announced April 25 in NY. This was Hollyday's third consecutive year being named a semifinalist.

Last month, 20 semifinalists were announced in each category.

Consumers that have any of these cheeses from Vulto Creamery should return the cheese to the purchase location for a refund. State officials said a Whole Foods grocery store in Fairfield received Vulto cheese.

Also among this year's local nominees, the beloved proprietor of Upperline Restaurant, JoAnn Clevenger, is nominated for a fourth time as well, for Outstanding Restaurateur.

This is the third nomination for the chefs, who were also finalists past year. Patisserie are in the Outstanding Baker category, Bar Agricole is nominated for Outstanding Bar Program, and Manresa's David Kinch and The Restaurant at Meadowood's Christopher Kostow are vying for Best Chef. Also on the semifinalist list: Ashley Christensen of Raleigh, Andrea Reusing of Chapel Hill and Mike Lata of Charleston for Outstanding Chef, and Gabe Barker of Pizzeria Mercato of Carrboro and Shuai Wang of Short Grain in Charleston for Rising Star Chef. The top vote-getter in each category will win the award and receive the Beard medallion at the gala awards ceremony in Chicago on May 1. Shaya, the modern Israeli restaurant from chef Alon Shaya and the Besh Restaurant Group, won Best New Restaurant in 2016.

Often called "the Oscars of food", the James Beard Foundation Awards recognize the country's finest restaurants, chefs and other food and wine professionals and are voted on by previous James Beard winners, the restaurant and chef awards committee, and regional restaurant critics and food and wine editors.
