Greenblatt reaffirmed Trump's commitment to Israel's security, as well as his desire to help Israel and the Palestinians achieve peace through direct negotiations.

After their meeting in Jerusalem on Monday, Greenblatt and Netanyahu declared their commitment to "advance a genuine and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians that strengthens the security of Israel and enhances stability in the region", according to the statement, put out jointly by the USA and Israeli governments.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday told Jason Greenblatt, US President Donald Trump's special representative for global negotiations, that a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians is possible, a US Consulate statement said.

Palestinian officials say that Mahmoud Abbas was able to squeeze major concessions from US President Donald Trump when he called the Palestinian leader over the weekend.

According to a statement by Netanyahu's office the visit aims to "continue discussions relating to settlement construction in the hope of working out an approach that is consistent with the goal of advancing peace and security".

"President Abbas & I discussed how to make progress toward peace, building capacity of Palestinian security forces & stopping incitement", Greenblatt tweeted after the meeting. "I'm looking at a two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like", Trump said.

Trump will also reportedly offer to rescind his promise to return the US Embassy to Jerusalem, a move that would offer significant backing to Israel's claim to the holy city.

In February, Trump hosted Netanyahu at the White House, with both leaders appearing comfortable with one another.

While addressing the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC during the presidential race a year ago, Trump observed that "it's really the parties that must negotiate a resolution themselves", rather than have one imposed by third parties.

Greenblatt and Abbas met at the Mukata, the PA presidential headquarters in Ramallah on Tuesday, in the second meeting between the Palestinian leader and a member of the new United States administration.
