Mrs. Merkel Goes To Washington: German Chancellor Will Meet President Trump Tuesday

Merkel was a close ally of former President Obama, but Trump has been critical of the influential European leader on issues such as trade and refugees.

The United States will release its Labour Market Conditions Index for February tonight, after having announced steady jobs growth last Friday. He even predicted that voters would overthrow her but simultaneously described her as a great world leader.

The two were expected to discuss strengthening the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance, collaborating to fight terrorism and taking steps to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, White House officials said Friday. Merkel has been a leading critic of Trump's effort to ban travelers temporarily from seven Muslim-majority nations, a list that has since been pared back to six. Merkel can mostly negotiate on this point from a position of strength-given Germany's record on promoting renewables-but one pressure point may be her lobbying of US regulators to relax environmental standards for German diesel cars.

Although, Trump has been disapproving of Merkel's policies on many issues in the past, administration officials have indicated in a press briefing, the goal of Tuesday's meeting will "have a positive interaction". As in other similar tours, Merkel will be accompanied by an army of business leaders, but this time the delegation faces an uncertain reception as Trump preaches an "America First" policy.

"Merkel has been studying Trump from afar", Der Spiegel reported.

Talks between German officials and the Trump administration suggest that there will be close cooperation between the two countries on policy toward Russian Federation, a senior German government official says.
