Seven killed in Istanbul helicopter crash

A fire-fighting helicopter has crashed near Istanbul on Friday. Two pilots were on board, as well as two company executives, one Turkish and the other Russian, Eczacibasi said.

The helicopter crashed after it apparently hit a television tower due to the dense fog in the area.

"We are saddened with the news of the death of seven people, including the two pilots on board the helicopter", said a statement by Kugu Aviation, the company which operated the helicopter.

A large number of emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the crash, and the E-5 highway was reportedly closed.

It crashed on a highway in Buyukcekmece district after taking off from Ataturk Airport, governor Vasip Sahin said.

Images posted on social media showed huge plumes of black smoke billowing from the crash scene in Buyukcekmece district.

Authorities have not ruled out a technical fault as the cause of the crash.

The tower, which is no longer used for transmitting signals, has a restaurant at the top. The DHA agency said four Russians were in the helicopter.

The company executive was a Turkish national who headed the firm's operations in Russian Federation, he added.
