Detained DACA Recipient Released, But Dreamers Still At Risk

She spoke at a press conference on March 1 in front of City Hall in Jackson, recounting the moment ICE agents arrested her father and brother just weeks before.

When reached Friday morning, Thomas Byrd, ICE spokesperson, declined to comment.

Vargas has been in the US since her parents brought her here from Argentina at the age of 7. According to her petition, one of the ICE agents who had participated in the raid on her home said to her, "Remember me?" "We maintain our commitment to the rights of all persons in the USA, regardless of immigration status". Ms. Vargas appears to have committed no crime and was only speaking out on behalf of her family, who is threatened by this President's misguided immigration agenda.

Orders of supervision mean either alternatives to detention (like ankle bracelet electronic monitoring) or supervised release, which requires a person to report to an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement office once a month or once every few months.

The two have helped OR become the only team in the league to rank in the top three in both offense and defense. Guard Elgin Cook - the 2016 tournament's Most Outstanding Player - and forward Dwayne Benjamin both graduated.

Daniela Vargas spoke out at Immigration Press Conference calling to open discussion with local community leaders and law enforcement agencies.

ICE agents had handcuffed Vargas as well, but they let her go after Vargas informed them of her Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals status, which she had filed to renew on February 10, five days before the arrest, her attorney, Abigail Peterson, said last week.

After a week and a half in detention, during which her lawyers called to have her released and news outlets picked up on her story, Vargas was informed early Friday that she was being freed. "We appreciate the ongoing support and work of the Southern Poverty Law Center, National Immigration Law Center, United We Dream, and the many others who have come out in support of Daniela".

The Trump administration has said it is putting a priority on the deportation of criminals, but the Department of Public Safety, acting on Trump's immigration enforcement executive order, has given wide discretion to immigration and border officers in deciding whom they take into custody. This is direct retaliation for her speaking out at the event.
